For the purposes of reliable industry benchmarking, Intelligent Spas defines "spa" as: "a business offering water-based treatments practiced by qualified personnel in a professional, relaxing and healing environment" Source: Intelligent Spas This definition was developed to support the original meaning of spa being "healing through water". Water-based treatments may include body wraps, body scrubs, baths, etc. A relaxing and healing environment distinguishes spas from standard beauty salons and clinical medical centres that are not promoted as spa businesses. Qualified personnel include employees who have successfully completed professional external training courses and/or on-the-job training of relevant standard operating and treatment procedures required of a professional spa businesses. In order to benchmark effectively, data needs to be collected from similar types of businesses. For example, it is not reliable to benchmark a large day spa with extensive facilities against a basic nail spa with no facilities. This would not provide accurate data for either business to use. Therefore we exclude "other" types of spas from the survey so the benchmark data is usable and reliable for eligible spas. A strict definition is also required to enable reliable collection and comparison of survey information across multiple countries. Intelligent Spas' 'benchmarking' definition and calculation of total spa numbers may therefore differ slightly to spa definitions and spa estimates published by local spa associations and other industry representatives which generally promote a wider definition which includes "other" types of spas and this is necessary in order to achieve their specific objectives. The various estimates of spa numbers may be promoted effectively and even together by simply referencing the source and elaborating on the differences. There are also salons and other business types using "spa" in their name which confuses the situation further. Comprehensive research is conducted to review business types and the following are excluded from Intelligent Spas' benchmarking survey in order to produce reliable and comparable benchmarks for spa operators:
